Golden rules and good advice for long journeys

Respect for the rules and maximum attention: those who choose to travel on the road, by car or other means, must do so with awareness so as not to create danger for themselves and others.

BEFORE SETTING OFF, on days that may record heavy traffic, it is essential to check the efficiency of your vehicle by carefully checking the water and oil levels in the engine, the functionality of the brakes and the condition of the tyres.

Furthermore, it is important to remember other good tips for travelling safely:

  • choose intelligent departures avoiding, if possible, the most critical days and hours for car traffic
  • plan the trip and know alternative routesalso finding out about construction sites that remain open and alternative routes
  • keep constantly updated on traffic and weather conditions
  • leave with small comfort items on board, especially water, especially if travelling with children
  • arrange luggage rationally balancing the weights and not overloading the car
  • identify a correct position for transporting animals
  • avoid large meals and alcohol
  • be sufficiently rested
  • avoid taking medicinesthat cause effects that limit attention

DURING THE JOURNEY it is particularly important to respect the rules of the Highway Code. The Highway Police, especially on the most critical days, intensifies surveillance checks on the safety of motorists to prevent accidents and disruptions to traffic.

In this regard, do not forget to:

  • keep your seat belts fastened
  • use appropriate child seats
  • do not get distracted while driving with the radio and mobile phone
  • respect the speed limits which in any case must be adjusted to the contingent road, traffic and atmospheric conditions
  • keep your dipped headlights on on the motorway
  • keep a safe distance
  • be careful when overtaking
  • always wear a protective helmet for those who drive or travel on motorcycles and mopeds
  • do not use the emergency lanes
  • make frequent stops to break the monotony of the journey especially if you feel tired
