A24: the motorway section of the Roviano landslide reopens with a double lane, in both directions

Just two weeks after the rockfall on the A24 motorway near Roviano, the section affected by the landslide has been reopened with two lanes in both directions. A result achieved, working day and night, by the technicians of the Toto Group, in coordination with the staff of SdP, who installed a special rockfall barrier in time for the long Easter weekend. Once again, group synergies have made it possible to resolve a dangerous situation on a stretch of the highway, between the Carsoli/Oricola and Vicovaro/Mandela exits, designed and built in a landslide area over half a century ago and which should be rebuilt as a variant, as has been repeatedly reported to the granting Ministry.

To reopen the highway, SdP immediately took action with a temporary solution, a concrete wall installed in just 30 hours, which made it possible to plug the emergency and reopen traffic in both directions, albeit on a single lane. Now a special rockfall protection net has made it possible to restore full-speed circulation on both carriageways. The net, with an extension of 60 metres and a height of 6 metres, has been tested to absorb up to 5,000 kJ thanks to a device for dissipating the energy produced by landslides. It was installed in complete safety by expert climbers in constant coordination with operators who monitored in real time for signs of further detachments upstream.

The uprights will be installed to extend the rockfall barrier for another 100 meters upstream and downstream of the landslide area, where the danger is not immediate but must be prevented. The works will be suspended to allow full safe use of the highway during the Easter period. They will resume on Tuesday 19 April, with possible reductions in the carriageway and complete reopenings during the weekends.

SdP has once again moved first and alone, in a climate of constant emergency, because the economic planning tool that regulates the relationship between the Concessionaire and the Grantor and indicates the priority interventions, the PEF, has been missing for almost 10 years. Pending approval, after 18 projects and simulations sent by SdP to the competent Ministries, the section between Carsoli and Vicovaro, which has reached the end of its life, was recently included by the Extraordinary Commissioner in the list of the most urgent projects, for which the first 800 million euros are already available today. But bureaucracy is delaying the opening of the construction site for the variant section, deaf and impassive in the face of all the signs that remind us that time has already run out.
