A24 Fornaca Viaduct: Reconstruction Begins

Six months after the demolition with explosive microcharges, the new Corten steel decks of the Fornaca viaduct, in the direction of L’Aquila, are being positioned. The work was carried out without interrupting motorway traffic.

The Fornaca, like its neighbors on the L’Aquila section, is among the first viaducts built on the A24-A25 network. In its more than fifty years of service it has brilliantly passed the test of recent earthquakes, ensuring the arrival of timely relief to the affected populations in 2009. Today the time has come to replace it with a new structure, safer and of greater durability and resistance.

The new viaduct will retain the route and shape of the old one but will be rebuilt with the most advanced engineering criteria, in line with the most recent anti-seismic regulations on buildings.
